Adult Literacy Classes for Women
Helping women gain essential reading, writing, numeracy, and digital skills — and the confidence to use them.

At the Chelsea Education and Community Center, adult women from the Dhapasi community walk through our doors not just to learn letters and numbers, but to reclaim their voice and agency. Our Adult Literacy Program offers women a second chance at education—many for the very first time. We believe that literacy is more than just reading and writing. It’s the foundation for independence, confidence, and change.
Since 2013, Papa’s House has been running an Adult Literacy Class for women in the local community. The program offers lessons in Nepali, English, and Mathematics, with a structured progression through different levels: Basic I, Basic II, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, and Advanced.
In Basic I, women focus on learning Nepali and English.
From Basic II onward, Mathematics is also introduced alongside Nepali and English.
In addition to classroom learning, Papa’s House organizes workshops, recreational activities, and educational tours, which not only broaden participants’ knowledge and boost their confidence but also equip them with practical skills they can use in daily life.
Over the years, these activities—combined with academic lessons—have helped women gain essential literacy and numeracy skills, improve their ability to manage household and community responsibilities, access information, and support their children’s education. Many have experienced increased self-confidence, greater participation in community decision-making, and improved employment opportunities, making the program a source of both personal growth and community empowerment.
